HERMON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Firefighters and forest rangers put out a small wildfire in Hermon Thursday evening.
No homes were threatened by the fire but it did manage to burn about three acres of field grass. Responders say a landowner was legally burning the field off of Clark Road when the flames got out of control.
Six fire crews were called to the scene and managed to get the fire knocked down quickly. No one was hurt but forest rangers say the situation could have been a lot worse.
"If the wind was right...a little more wind and a little more fuel load and it climbed up into these softwood trees behind us here it could have made a run," said ranger Jerry Parsons, "and in the area fuels and actually done some torching..and maybe even made a short run as a ground fire."
Investigators say the landowner did follow all safety procedures while torching the field. They say the case is a a firm reminder to always have mandated tools while burning and don't hesitate to call for help if needed.
