NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine (AP) - Republican Gov. Paul LePage is designating $10,000 in contingency funds to help build a veterans monument in New Gloucester.

LePage's office said Thursday that the New Gloucester Veterans Monument will have the names of more than 1,140 local veterans engraved on granite tablets. The American flag, state of Maine flag and flag honoring prisoners of war and those missing in action will wave behind the memorial.

The monument is being built by the town of New Gloucester, the Maine Historical Society and Lunn-Hunnewell AMVETS Post No. 6.

Engineers will soon prepare the ground to begin the construction.
