(NEWS CENTER) - Last month, a group of Maine Woods guides, members of the Penobscot Nation, scholars and others completed a 16-day canoe trip retracing one of the adventures in Henry David Thoreau's "The Maine Woods." The expedition was organized by Maine Woods Discovery and Northern Forest Center.
The trip marked the 150th anniversary of Thoreau's trip, which he wrote about in "The Maine Woods." It was one of the first published accounts of recreational travel through Maine's "uninterrupted" forest landscape. The group traveled more than 300 miles over 16 days, over vast lakes and wild rivers.
